Behind the cup
This espresso is pure Robusta, and deliberately so. The beans come from Kodagu (Coorg) in the Indian state of Karnataka, where they grow at around 1,000 metres. In India, Parchment denotes washed Robusta, while AB refers to the bean size grade. The variety is the Robusta hybrid CxR.
Robusta differs markedly from Arabica: it contains more caffeine, has far less acidity and forms an especially dense, long-lasting crema. Washed processing makes this Robusta cleaner in the cup than many others. We roast it medium-dark for maximum body.
Expect nougat, hazelnut, roasted nuts and cocoa, carried by a syrupy mouthfeel with almost no acidity. On its own it makes a bold, uncompromising espresso, and in milk drinks it easily holds its own. Many people also blend it with an Arabica of their choice to add crema and body to their own mix.
These espresso beans are for you if you want a strong, crema-rich Italian-style espresso or simply prefer a punchier cappuccino. Order them whole or finely ground for your portafilter.
